I am not sure Russia ever wanted to save Ukraine. Russia declared sovereignty one year before Ukraine, the only thing Russia wanted was for Ukraine to at least remain neutral and not go against Russian interests.
Annexing Ukrainian territory kinda came later. This is not the primary objective. Russia will annex as much territory as it deems necessary to achieve the primary goals. I canāt say with certainty they will take Odessa but they might not in the end.
