I am being serious guys. I have lived most of my adult life in big cities, where having a car was expensive and due to the availability of public transport quite useless. And I got my driving license when moving with my mother to the countryside.
Therefore I kind am less car pilled than most people, who cling to their cars like it is the holy grail of freedom. I find public transport to be better in that, driving is stressful and trying, you can’t drink or do drugs before driving, and if you are me, you will be driving alone. I drive when it is absolutely necessary.
The car stinks, pollutes, takes space to park, costs you money for fuel, repairs, insurance, and in big cities there are various car taxes. We have two cars in the garage, and my feeling is that even though me and my mother have the income to maintain them, we could save a lot of money if we got rid of one of them. Not to mention we could empty space in the garage.
So, recently Tucker Carlson went to Moscow to interview Putin and he trolled the Americans with the cleanliness and opulence of Moscow Metro.
Then Fareed Zakaria came to rescue the narrative by claiming that the New York metro is the product of capitalism, democracy, and diversity and all that jazz. And that’s why it looks terrible, there are junkies loitering, people getting mugged, women getting raped. I heard that in Murica, the politicians don’t give a fuck about public transport because they all use a car to get around.
Meanwhile, introduction of capitalism in Russia did not take from Moscow metro and the new stations follow the model set during Stalin’s rule.
Twentieth century cities were built to accommodate a car. Roads, parking lots, everything built with the thought that you will drive there. But humans, in my opinion weren’t exactly meant to have their arse carried by dinosaur juice powered automobiles. Our hunter gatherer ancestors walked every day some twelve kilometers in pursuit of large beasts, and you barely walk anywhere? Pathetic!
Imagine cities that would be made for walking, wouldn’t it be better for health? Wouldn’t you get some movement, and wouldn’t the city be less polluted? Weren’t medieval cities with bustling markets, shops and taverns, all located within a walking distance of each other better than Mc Mansion suburbia with a mall? Personally, with online purchases, shops ain’t coming back, malls are a thing of the past, I can have shit delivered to me by drones that can land in my vast garden.
There is this idea of 15 minute cities, and it has an adherent in the WEF. And it is a brilliant idea in my opinion, having cities planned so everything would be 15 minutes away sounds perfect. But rightoids are presenting this as something that will limit your freedom. Your freedom to drive everywhere by car.
So, what is to be done? We can have a world with fewer cars, a world with nice public spaces, a world with clean public transport… We need Stalin!
