Is This the End of Tanks and Armored Vehicles?

Tanks and armored vehicles seem to suffering in modern warfare. I have seen countless of videos of Russians destroying Ukrainian tanks and vice versa. I have even seen Hamas destroying an Israeli Merkava tank with an FPV drone. There just seem to be so many weapons aimed at destroying the tank. Alongside the FPV drones there are the classic land mines, anti-tank rockets, drone navigated artillery and finally aviation. Any attacking side seems to suffer heavy losses in armor during offensives.

The tank however is still very useful. It is a mobile firepower that is indispensable say in city fighting for taking out snipers. But in the city it is most vulnerable together with its crew. In the future, the infantry might go for smaller vehicles that would be remote controlled and would perform the same task as the tank.

It reminds of a historical precedent. In the fourteenth century, the armored knight was the king, until the latter ran against longbow men or firearms. And then it took another two centuries to phase the knights out. The same way the tank seems to be the staple of the twentieth century world wars, and in today’s world it is becoming obsolete or rather its use has to be modified from the previous wars.

  1. There are drones, I remember both Russia and Estonia for whatever reason made some. Howe & Howe made an electric drone tank, which is quite impressive, but not practical. Overal those tank sized drones are messy, and problem for logistics.

As for miniature tank-like drones, Serbia randomly has the best right now, the Little Miloš series. Bunch of different versions, some even carry malytka rockets, or even couple of tank projectiles. I think these are the future of city fights.

As for the big tanks, in cities, they only made sense together with infantry, but these days they attracted those small drones flying above.

Anyway, Gaza will be a mess, I feel sorry for them, Hamas being butchers aside, 70% of people there were expelled from their homes.

    1. I am not saying these autonomous drones will be the name of the game. My mention is sheer speculation.

      1. Honestly, nobody knows, it’s always a matter of trying and failing, or succeeding.

Bit I’m curious why no one tried those miniature robot tanks. Some have machine guns, and some malyutkas, It shouldn’t be too hard for Russia to make some. It’s not a game-changer, but it can lower casualties here and there in urban fights.

    1. But on the other hand the tank has immense firepower. Hence this is a question of tactics and whether the tank is provided with sufficient protection such as in the form of electronic warfare.
